Laying the Le Cheile foundation stone in 1996
The Le Cheile group has been in operation in the Westside since 1982. Westside is a term that came to be used to describe the corporation housing estates that were built in the 1970s in the Newcastle, Shantalla and Rahoon area of Galway city. Suddenly the area was full of houses and a new community of all ages but there were no facilities for them; unemployment was also very high at that time. Members of the community came together and set up Le Cheile with the aim of delivering economic initiative with a social element. Le Cheile was formed into a limited company in 1989.
Over the years Le Cheile have been responsible for for facilitating many new services in the area such as the Westside Resource Centre, Job Target and the Local Employment Services Network. Le Cheile were also involved in the planning for commercial units and Enterprise Centre where the Le Cheile office is based.
In 1998, in recognition of the work undertaken by Le Cheile, the City Council decided to name the road serving the Enterprise Centre "Bothar Le Cheile" which is a permanent acknowledgement of the working partnership evident in the Westside Community.
COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT SCHEME
Le Cheile recognised from the start that many of the difficulties encountered by the community had their roots in unemployment. Le Cheile Westside Co Ltd secured a Community Employment project in 1994 and became the sponsor of the scheme. CE Schemes are funded by the Department of Social Protection.
The CE scheme has been running very successfully since 1994 and currently employs 35 people from the local area as well as a Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor.
